UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS
Higher education in North Bihar began with the establishment of Langat Singh College the then Bhumihar Brahmin College at Muzaffarpur on 3rd July, 1899. The name of the College was changed in 1915 by prefixing the name of Mr. Greer, the then commissioner of Tirhut Division and was popularly known as G.B.B. College. After independence, the college was renamed as Langat Singh College in 1951. This was the only college situated in north of the Ganges in Bihar and emerged as a prominent centre of learning. Mahatma Gandhi stayed in the college while going to launch non-co-operation movement in Champaran. It was a historic moment. The college has the distinction of being served by Rajendra Prasad, Shri J.B. Kripalani, Shri Mr. Malkani, Shri Ram Dhari Singh ‘Dinkar’ and several others.
The Department of Economics in L.S. College has been one of the most prestigious and premier department of the college, where Post Graduate teaching was started as early as 1950. The department flowered into a constituent department of the University in 1975, thus separating from the mother institution after obtaining adulthood. In 1977 it was shifted to the newly constructed Social Science Block of the University.
The University Department of Economics has been the apex centre for higher education and creative research in Economics in North Bihar. It was a distinction of being well-managed and full of academic and research activities and on an average 20 scholars obtains Ph.D. degree under supervision of members of the Department in a year.
Dr. N. Jha, a noted economist has served the department in the fifties, after some time he became Vice-Chancellor of Bihar University, Muzaffarpur and the chairman of Inter University Board. Dr. Jagarnath Mishra (on leave and lien from the department) was the reader of opposition in Bihar Legislative Assembly. He was chief minister of Bihar including L.N. Mishra college of Business Management, Muzaffarpur and L.N. Mishra Institute of Economic Development and Social change, Patna.
The Department has been fortunate enough to have a cohesive and hard-working team of teachers and scholars. There is a close interaction between the teachers and the students. The Department has rich Seminar Library. It is, therefore, a natural choice for those who aspire for higher studies and advanced research in Economics, particularly in this region. The Department offers specialization in six branched of Economics i.e. Indian Finance, Statistics, Monetary Economics, Growth and planning, Labour Economics and Rural Economics. The Percentage of successful students at the University examination and Rural Economics. The percentage of successful students at the university examinations has always been very commendable. Besides, under Grants plan Programme, a large number of research scholars from Nepal and Aasam have obtained the degree of Ph.D. under the guidance provided by several teachers of Department. The faculty members have been very active and enthusiastic in taking part in academic deliberations and participating in seminars, symposia and conferences.
